INTERACTIVE Web3D-MODEL
Iceland

This 3D digital elevation model represents Iceland and regions of the ocean around. It shows a part of the atlantic ridge and different parts of the relief in the sea area.
The scale is 1:10.000.000. mk-7.29

GEOGRAPHICAL BACKGROUND
The World's Largest
Vulcano Island

Iceland is the second largest island-state of Europe with an expanse of 103.000 qkm. It is located near the Arctic Circle and it is a part of the atlantic ridge. In earth`s history a lot of magma was produced, wich builds and enlarged the island. Iceland is the biggest volcanic island of the world and its landscape is characterized by volcanism.
8% of Iceland is covered with ice. Today there are not so many glaciers like in former times, but the Vatjanökull- glacier is one of the biggest in Europe.
The relief around Iceland is typical for all sea areas ,wich borders on continents .Around Iceland exists a continental shelf zone ( 200m depth ), wich merges to the continental slope. At the basic of the slope are the abyssal sea areas ( ca. 2700m depth ) wich are covered with sediments.
